Geumgang Jeondo

This piece of art is known as Geumgang Jeondo which means "Complete picture of Mount Geumgang." It is a painting that originates from the Josun dynasty of Korea, and was drawn by a painter named "Jeong Seon" in 1734.

It is interesting that Geumgangsan is actually a landscape that is located in North Korea, not in South Korea. The mountain is known for its beauty and many peaks. It is also known as "A mountain with 12,000 peaks." There are four different names for this mountain which are based off of the seasons. It is only called "Geumgangsan" in the spring, which translates to "Diamond Mountain." In the summer, the mountain is known as "Pongraesan" because legend says there is a spirit that dwells in the mountain during the summer. In the fall, the mountain is called "Phung'aksan" since it becomes covered with leaves. In the winter, it is called "Kaegolsan," or stone bone mountain. Geumgang Jeondo is probably one of the most popular Korean paintings in history. It was classified as the 217th Korean National treasure in 1984. The painting is currently being held at the Ho-Am Art Museum in Seoul, South Korea

Geumgang Jeondo was created with India ink with light colors on paper. It is 130.7 centimeters in height and 94.1 centimeters in width. The artwork was created while Jeong was viewing the actual mountains themselves. It depicts the pattern of all 12,000 peaks on the mountain. I can see that Jeong has used a bit of a similar pattern throughout the painting. Perhaps it is just the way that mountains were drawn back then using traditional techniques.

Overall, I really love the way that the artwork has been created. Although drawings and paintings that do not have color is not my most favorite type of art, I still think that they are beautiful in their own way. Not only that, but I am actually of Korean descent, so this painting has a lot of meaning for me. Because of this, it really helps me understand my cultural background.
